For our first Team Tuesday, we want to spotlight Bill Phillips, the Nlets Chief Security Officer. We asked him a few questions about his role and shared his responses below.

  • Q: What do you do at Nlets?
  • A: My role within the organization has recently changed. Historically, I have been responsible for the technical security and compliance of the Nlets organization. Now, I oversee the security of all IT functions and systems.

  • Q: Why did you decide to work at Nlets?
  • A: I started with Nlets in 2004 after the events of September 11th gave me a desire to play a part in ensuring the security of our nation. I applied at several federal law enforcement agencies and at Nlets. After I had several conversations with special agents that I knew, I chose Nlets.

  • Q: What are three career lessons you’ve learned so far?
  • A: I am always learning lessons – learned makes it seem like “that one is in the bag.” That is just never the case for me. I can always do better. That being said, I have learned a few things. First, be humble – there is always somebody smarter! Next, never quit/Be persistent - “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence” is the beginning of a quote attributed to Calvin Coolidge. Being persistent in my efforts to accomplish short and long term goals or projects has served me well. Third, own your mistakes/ingrain integrity – When pushing boundaries and growing skills mistakes are inevitable. Accepting the responsibility for mistakes is critical as is being able to articulate the rationale behind the process that led there, identifying the solution and learning from the error - striving to not repeat. This is even more important to call attention to an error when no one else will ever know that it was made.
